With technology becoming an integral part of our lives, we are able to do so much more than our forefathers. Saving precious moments in digital media is one such thing. Today, if you do not own a cellphone that has at least an average camera built into it, you must be living under a rock. Life presents us with so many events, that are worth being captured on camera and shared with our friends, or even the world. HD camcorders make this task easier, and the videos you get to save and share, turn out to be extremely good in quality.

Yes, with advances in technology, high definition digital camcorders are getting better everyday, and also becoming more affordable. Let us check out some of the cheapest camcorders that provide you with the highest video quality.

The criteria for judging a digital camcorder

When do you say a camcorder is good? What are the features that one must be looking for in a camcorder?

  • Well, one of the most important features we must consider is, the camcorder's resolution, which is basically the maximum dimensions (width x height) of the video.
  • The next feature is the maximum number of frames it can capture per second (fps). The higher the number, the smoother your video will be.
  • The final factor is the cost. Let us try to keep the cost as low as possible, maximizing the above two factors.

Aiptek HD-1

This is an entry level camcorder, which gives you a resolution of 720p at 30 fps. Because of the rather low frame rate, the videos can get jittery if the objects in the video are in motion. However you can lower the resolution to capture videos at a higher frame rate of 60 fps. Has 1 GB memory built into it, expandable to 32 GB. You can also capture photographs at a resolution of 8 MP. It is a good buy if you are interested in videos of family occasions. Comes at a low price, and has the typical handy cam feel to it.

Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (Blue)
Amazon Price: $46.00
List Price: $149.00

Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera

This is a very robust and hardy HD camcorder which has a small form factor. It comes with a protective rubber coating, that allows it to be usable even in rough weather conditions. It captures video at a resolution of 720p and at 60 fps. These numbers are good enough for crisp and clear high definition videos. You can upload them easily to Youtube. The best part is, it uses rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, so you don't have to worry about buying batteries for a long time. This is one of the cheapest camcorders available in the market.

Sony Webbie MHS-PM1 HD Camcorder

This small camcorder from Sony is full of high-end features. You can capture real HD videos at 1080p resolution. It comes with a lens that can be rotated, allowing you to get different angles more easily. The audio recording is also considerable good. You can also take photographs at 5 MP. The downside is that it has only 12 MB of internal memory, which means you have to buy an SD card. It weighs only 1.8 pounds, so it is very easy to carry it.

Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera (Blue)
Amazon Price: Too low to display
List Price: $149.00

Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD Video Camera

This is one of the latest video cameras from Kodak. Captures very crisp videos at resolutions of 720p and 1080p. Like the other Kodak above, this too is very rugged, and is built to shoot even in rain and snow. Well, you can even dive up to 10 feet underwater, and capture HD underwater videos. Comes with built-in image stabilization, allowing you to take videos of sports and outdoor activities without any problems. You can easily edit and upload these videos to Youtube and Facebook. It is only slightly costlier than the Kodak Zx1.

Flip UltraHD Video Camera

This 3rd generation camcorder from Flip, is the best camcorder you can buy while keeping costs low. Extremely light, and very thin. Captures ultraHD video at 720p and 60 fps. The quality of the lens is so good, that the difference is clearly visible in the videos you capture with this. Comes with 8 GB built-in memory and image stabilization to highly reduce motion blur. Uses lithium batteries, which are eco-friendly too. The user interface is also highly intuitive and minimal. Highly recommended.

So, there you have it. The 5 cheapest camcorders you can buy to start capture high definition videos. Remember, resolution, though important does not always provide you with superior video quality. The lens and the software of the camcorders play a very important role too. For instance, the Flip models win easily at video quality, despite offering videos only at 720p. So, buy one, and start recording. Youtube has a partner program, that you can join if you upload very interesting and viral videos. You can check that out too after buying your HD cam.

I recently purchased the Flip Ultra HD video camera and it's just amazingly simple to use. It fits in my pocket and can be ready to take film in seconds. With 2 hours of available video storage I rarely have to remove my recorded videos to make room for more. I grabbed the tripod for it as well, but it's practically useless, too small.

Otherwise I couldn't be happier with this particular camera and would recommend it to anyone. The software with it makes editing videos and creating photos really a piece of cake.

Thanks for the info.
